PUBLIC HEARING TO DISCUSS ASBESTOS FOUND IN SOIL AT GRACE SITE (NEXT TO RUSSELL FIELD) AND UPDATED SITE CONSTRUCTION PLANS
Meeting is 7:00 p.m., SHARP, Thursday, June 17, 1999 - near Alewife T Station

• Asbestos was found throughout site.
• Asbestos causes cancer and stays in lungs for life if breathed.
• W. R. Grace & Co. plans to develop plans to develop most of "Grace Site" with 3 office buildings and a hotel.
• Construction will stir up soil; asbestos may become airborne.
• Grace's testing was not enough to tell where all the asbestos really is.
• Grace doesn't plan to do any more soil sampling to find other places where asbestos might be.
• Grace plans to use minimal safety precautions in areas where their spotty testing didn't find asbestos.
• New buildings will create more traffic around and through neighborhoods which will also cause more air pollution

If you don't like Grace's plans, this is your chance to be heard.

NOTICE OF A PUBLIC MEETING
TO BE HELD FOR THE
W. R. GRACE and CO.-CONN. SITE AT ALEWIFE
RTN 3-17014

A public meeting will be held by W. R. Grace and Co.-Conn. to present the results of the Evaluation for Asbestos in Soil conducted at the Grace site in December 1998, which includes an Imminent Hazard Evaluation based on the results of this program, an approach to Risk Characterization for RTN 3-17014, and a conceptual Airborne Asbestos Management and Monitoring Plan for the Grace site. Grace will also present its Phase II work plan which will address collection of groundwater, surface water, sediment and additional air samples to address the presence of asbestos in these media.

Grace will also provide an update on the status of its development plans for the site.
